DETROIT – Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown visited Durfee Elementary-Middle School on Jan. 6, distributing school supplies to more than 100 sixth-and seventh-grade students.
As part of his St. Brown Foundation, the receiver launched a proven literacy program, called Rhymes with Reason, earlier this year at Durfee.

The program uses popular music to help middle school students learn new vocabulary words. During the event, St. Brown read to students and spoke about the importance of education.
Students also participated in a Q&A with St. Brown before taking a group photo to conclude the visit.
“Being able to visit Durfee means a lot to me,” said St. Brown. “This is where our partnership with Rhymes with Reason started, and seeing how engaged the students are reminds me why education is so important. Reading opens doors, and I want kids to know they can go after anything they set their minds to.”
Durfee Elementary-Middle School principal LaToyia Webb said the event made a lasting impression on students.
“Our students were truly inspired by Amon-Ra’s visit,” said Webb. “Having someone they admire take the time to read with them and talk about the importance of education reinforces that their dreams are achievable.”
Thanks to donations from fans and community partners—Revolve Cycling, Adidas, Equip Foods, Magic Spoon, Staples, Little Caesar’s, Wicked Awesome Wishes and Lady Jane’s—St. Brown and his Foundation distributed hundreds of school supplies including clear backpacks, headphones, books, calculators, pencils, erasers, pens, highlighters and more.
