Head coach Kyle Whittingham names Michigan football’s offensive coaches for first season with school

Whittingham brought in four offensive coaches from his previous staff at Utah

ANN ARBOR, Mich.Michigan Wolverines head football coach Kyle Whittingham announced the hiring of his initial offensive coaching staff for his first season with the university.

Following the Jan. 2 announcement of Jason Beck as Michigan’s Sanford Robertson Offensive Coordinator, Whittingham has brought in four offensive coaches from his previous Utah staff: Jim Harding (offensive line), Micah Simon (wide receivers), Freddie Whittingham (tight ends), and Koy Detmer Jr. (quarterbacks).

Marques Hagans (assistant wide receivers) and Mike Lynch (assistant offensive line) join from Penn State and Nevada, respectively.

Tony Alford remains on staff as the running backs coach and run game coordinator, while Fred Jackson continues as an analyst working with the running backs.

Jim Harding

Harding returns from Utah, where he spent 12 seasons developing one of the nation’s top offensive lines.

He also served as Utah’s assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator. Harding helped produce 13 NFL offensive linemen and coached multiple all-conference players, including 2025 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year Spencer Fano.

Harding played college football at Toledo and holds degrees from Toledo and Missouri.

Micah Simon

Simon joined after coaching Utah’s receivers in 2025 and New Mexico in 2024.

He helped lead receivers to all-conference honors and has experience as an offensive analyst at Syracuse.

Simon played at BYU and graduated with a degree in exercise science.

Freddie Whittingham

Whittingham served Utah for 10 seasons, coaching tight ends and serving as recruiting coordinator.

His tight ends contributed significantly to Utah’s rushing and passing success. Whittingham played at BYU, where he was a team captain and academic All-American.

Freddie has a background in higher education sales and marketing and is the brother of the new football head coach, Kyle.

Koy Detmer Jr.

Detmer Jr. worked with Utah’s quarterbacks in 2025 and has experience coaching at New Mexico, Syracuse, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, where he played quarterback.

He is the son of former NFL player Koy Detmer Sr. and holds a degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Marques Hagans

Hagans brings 16 years of coaching experience, most recently at Penn State.

He previously coached at Virginia, developing multiple NFL players and all-conference receivers.

Hagans played quarterback and wide receiver at Virginia and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2006.

Mike Lynch

Lynch joins from Nevada, where he coached offensive line and running backs.

He has extensive experience, including eight seasons at Syracuse as offensive coordinator and running backs coach, as well as coaching stints at Bowling Green, Eastern Illinois, Montana, and Utah State.

Lynch played college football at Montana and holds degrees from Montana and Utah State.
