MUSKEGON, Mich. – Mountains are hard to come by in Michigan, which makes it hard to believe that snowboarding started here in the Mitten State.
Muskegon is where the sport originated in the 1960s (called “snurfing” -- a combination of snow and surfing) and it has grown into a global sensation.
For almost three decades, the rest of the world has embraced the sport at the Winter Olympics.
Ski resorts across Michigan also see a resurgence in popularity every four years. Local 4’s Hobie Artigue went to Crystal Mountain to experience what it takes to succeed on the slopes.
