Lions reportedly sign K Matt Prater to 3-year, $9M deal

DETROIT – The Detroit Lions have reached a three-year deal with kicker Matt Prater. The contract is worth $9 million, according to NFL's Ian Rapoport.

Prater was released from the Broncos during the 2014 season after he received a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's alcohol policy. The 30-year-old was coming off one of the best seasons for a field goal kicker in NFL history in 2013, making 25 of 26 field goals, including a long of 64 yards, an NFL record.

After signing with the Lions in Week 6, Prater made 21 of 26 attempts, including three makes from 50+ yards. Prater missed two field goals in his first game and made 87.5 percent in the final 10 games.

He also made two field goals in Detroit's playoff loss to Dallas.

Prater said after season that he wanted to stay in Detroit after the franchise gave him a second chance. This deal will keep him in a Lions uniform through the 2017 season.

In 2015 he will play under new special teams coordinator Joe Marciano, who was hired by the team last month.
