In big shift, Germany to give AstraZeneca shots to over 65s
Read full article: In big shift, Germany to give AstraZeneca shots to over 65sA package of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is shown in the state of Brandenburg where the first coronavirus vaccinations are given in doctors' surgeries, in Senftenberg, Germany, Wednesday, March 3, 2021. The decision is “good news for older people who are waiting for a vaccination," German Health Minister Jens Spahn said. The German panel said its new guidance also suggests waiting 12 weeks between administering the first and second AstraZeneca shots, as studies show this increases the vaccine's effectiveness. Britain, which has had a notably successful vaccination rollout, has been going with the 12-week spacing for vaccine shots since last year. France, Belgium and Italy already loosened their age restrictions for the AstraZeneca vaccine earlier this week as European nations scramble to confront a looming third spike in COVID-19 cases.

Prosecutor: Wisconsin pharmacist thought vaccine was unsafe
Read full article: Prosecutor: Wisconsin pharmacist thought vaccine was unsafeThe Wisconsin pharmacist, accused of intentionally spoiling hundreds of doses of coronavirus vaccine, convinced the world was "crashing down" told police he tried to ruin hundreds of doses of coronavirus vaccine because he felt the shots would mutate people's DNA, according to court documents released Monday. “He’d formed this belief they were unsafe,” Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol said during a virtual hearing. The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine as well as the Moderna vaccine rely on messenger RNA or mRNA, which is a fairly new technology used in vaccines that experts have been working on for years. The Moderna vaccine is viable for 12 hours outside refrigeration, so workers used the vaccine to inoculate 57 people before discarding the rest. It was updated on Jan. 5, 2021 to correct that Brandenburg was arrested Dec. 31, not Dec. 30.

Court halts German far-right figure's expulsion from party
Read full article: Court halts German far-right figure's expulsion from partyBERLIN A prominent regional leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany on Friday won a court injunction against his expulsion from the party. Kalbitz vowed to fight the decision, which is hotly disputed inside the party. The Berlin state court ruled that the cancelation of Kalbitz's membership was inadmissible, news agency dpa reported. That means Kalbitz can continue to exercise his rights as a party member and a member of its national leadership until an AfD arbitration committee rules on the matter. Much of AfD's branch in Brandenburg is standing behind Kalbitz, one of the leading figures on the party's right wing.
