Robocalls, texts, and phishing emails from scammers are up this tax season compared to previous years, according to the consumer protection bureau of the FTC.

Sophisticated overseas criminals are stealing tens of billions of dollars from Americans every year, a crime wave projected to get worse as the U.S. population ages and technology makes it easier to successfully perpetrate fraud.

Last year, the Federal Trade Commission received over 64,000 romance scams reports that translated into $1.14 billion in reported losses.
