On the 25-year anniversary of Woods’ historic dismantling of Pebble Beach in the U.S. Open — a milestone win that some thought might puncture golf’s stereotype as a sport for rich, white men — Chase Johnson is the only player of Black heritage in the 156-man field at Oakmont.

The LPGA and the USGA have updated gender policies that will require players to be assigned female at birth or to have transitioned to female before going through male puberty.

Whan did not set a date for when he would leave. Even though the pandemic shut down the LPGA Tour for five months and took a chunk out of a decade of savings, Whan says the tour came out of the year even more financially secure. He did not offer a clear reason for stepping away or saying what he would do next.

The LPGA Tour was last played on Feb. 16 when Inbee Park won the Women's Australian Open. But I'm excited about what we have.Whan and his staff have been in constant contact with the PGA Tour, now in its sixth week back. The LPGA Tour is to resume July 31 with the LPGA Drive On Championship, a one-time event with a $1 million purse at Inverness Club in Toledo, site of next year's Solheim Cup. The turnaround won't be as quick as it is on the PGA Tour, which has a mobile lab on site. That compares with $75,000 for PGA Tour players who test positive.

Symetra Tour players will have to spend an extra year on the developmental circuit. Whan said if the Symetra Tour plays at least eight times in 2020, the top five on the money list would receive LPGA Tour cards. I think for most Symetra Tour players that wanted to play their way off of the tour, this is terrible news. Key to those tournaments is travel restrictions, such as a mandatory quarantine for two weeks when entering a country. At this point we think we can play around the current restrictions, Whan said.
