The Wisconsin Court of Appeals has unanimously rejected a request by “Making a Murderer” subject Steven Avery for a new trial or a hearing to present new evidence.

(CNN) - Brendan Dassey, the man whose murder conviction is at the center of Netflix's "Making a Murderer," is petitioning for clemency after spending more than a decade in prison. Dassey's attorney Laura Nirider announced Wednesday his defense had filed a petition for clemency with Wisconsin Gov. He was convicted of her murder in 2007 and has been serving a life sentence in a Wisconsin prison ever since. She said Dassey's attorney, Len Kachinsky, pressured his client into pleading guilty after Dassey was coerced into making a false statement. In November that same year, the Wisconsin attorney general filed a motion to release him from prison under the supervision of the US Probation Office.

A second docuseries on the case, Convicting a Murderer, is currently being worked on by director Shawn Rech. It was while Rech and his crew worked on the follow-up series that a man currently in prison for a separate murder conviction allegedly came forward to confess to killing Halbach, Rech told Newsweek. "We haven't confirmed the legitimacy of the confession, but seeing as it was given by a notable convicted murderer from Wisconsin, we feel responsible to deliver any and all possible evidence to law enforcement and legal teams," he told Newsweek. Rech would not identify the person who allegedly confessed to Halbachs murder, but did say it was not Dassey or Avery.
