The origin of the Juneteenth celebrations marking the end of slavery in the U.S. goes back to an order issued as Union troops arrived in Texas at the end of the Civil War.

This coming Sunday, the nation stops to commemorate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of emancipation of enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865.This happened more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.
