Square, Inc. to buy majority of Tidal and put Jay-Z on board

Under the deal, Square will pay $297 million in cash and stock for Tidal, Jay-Z will be named to Square's board of directors, and he and other artists who currently own shares in Tidal will remain stakeholders. Tidal has presented itself as the artist-friendly alternative to other music streamers, and Square says it will take that phenomenon further for musicians just as it has for businesses with its financial systems. 5 passionate Detroit artists aim to expand careers with inaugural TIDAL Unplugged music grant
DETROIT - Five up-and-coming artists with a passion for Detroit won a grant from TIDAL to help boost their careers. Sam Austins, Raye Williams, Emma Guzman, Olivia Millerschin and Laurie Love were chosen out of thousands of artists to receive the inaugural TIDAL Unplugged grant from the music platform. For Austins, the grant will allow him to start the next phase of his music, while Williams wants to reinvent herself. "I definitely was destined to come back to Detroit," Williams said. Williams compared the help the grant program will provide to the artists to the city of Detroit.
