Uniquely Detroit: John's Carpet House

DETROIT – "We've got all kinds of talent in the city of Detroit. You name it and we have it."

Big Pete Barrow and his team definitely have "it" at John's Carpet House. John's Carpet House is a series of live blues concerts every Sunday during the summer months. It's located at 5300 St. Aubin Street on the city's East side.

"We get the top-of-the-line musicians. They all come out to patronize us. Because they know what we're doing is for the neighborhood," said Barrow.

It's like a Detroit music history lesson come to life. On any given Sunday you could see stars from Motown, the Blues or even Detroit rock 'n' roll sharing the homemade stage.

"It's all about bringing the community together. Music not only soothes the soul, but it's relaxing," said Barrow.

It all started over 20 years ago across the street from the current location. John would host a jam session on his front porch. After John passed away, Big Pete Barrow bought some abandoned lots across the street. With the help of a friend who owns a construction company they cleared the lots, set up the stage, and the jam session lived on.

"You're not gonna find this type of entertainment anywhere else in the city. Nowhere ... and it's free."
