False positives deter women from regular breast cancer screening

A new study highlights that while most women who undergo additional testing after an abnormal mammogram do not have cancer, the experience of false positives can deter them from continuing regular screenings. Doctor McGeorge explains that approximately 10% of women will have an abnormal mammogram, 10% of those will need a biopsy, and 10% of those biopsies will reveal cancer. Despite the good news for many, the emotional and psychological toll of additional testing remains a significant concern.
