Ex-officer’s murder trial in death of Patrick Lyoya: Prosecution rests, defense requests mistrial
The trial of former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr, charged with second-degree murder for the April 2022 shooting of Patrick Lyoya, a Congolese refugee, saw the prosecution rest its case on April 30, 2025. Following this, the defense requested a mistrial, citing that two of the prosecution's expert witnesses were unfamiliar with Michigan law, and also sought a directed verdict to transfer the decision-making to the judge, both of which were denied by Judge Christina Mims.
