Michigan education budget undecided as lawmakers face October deadline

Michigan lawmakers are approaching an October 1 deadline to finalize budgets for roads, school aid, and the general fund. Amidst this, a campaign led by 482 Forward is pushing for a ballot proposal, "Invest in MI Kids," which aims to increase school funding through a graduated income tax. The proposal would impose a 5% surcharge on high-income earners, sparking criticism from small business owners and advocates who argue it could harm the economy. Opponents have challenged the proposal's clarity, but both sides anticipate it will be on the 2026 November ballot.
