Detroit neighborhoods get smoke alarms, fire safety education

DTE Energy is investing $150,000 in Detroit to promote fire safety during Fire Safety Month by installing smoke alarms and teaching fire prevention. Volunteers, in collaboration with the Red Cross, will visit neighborhoods to ensure families are equipped with safety tools. Key safety tips include maintaining a safe distance between space heaters and flammable objects, avoiding extension cords, and ensuring space heaters are turned off when unattended. Residents are also advised to avoid using stoves or grills for heating and to inspect furnaces and chimneys before winter.
