The Great Lake that wasn't: Lake Champlain

In 1998, Lake Champlain was briefly designated as a Great Lake due to an amendment by Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, which allowed Vermont and New York to access conservation funds typically reserved for states bordering the Great Lakes or oceans. Despite the status being revoked within three weeks due to backlash, the Lake Champlain Sea Grant continues to receive funding from the program.
