Metro Detroit drivers warned to slow down as icy conditions cause crashes

There have been 26 crashes reported on metro Detroit freeways from midnight to 7 a.m., with Michigan State Police Lieutenant Mike Shaw attributing this to drivers overestimating their abilities amid snowy conditions. Shaw advised reducing speed and maintaining extra distance to avoid skidding, highlighting that sudden braking on icy roads increases the risk of accidents. He also emphasized giving ample space to snow plows and emergency responders, as freeways are prioritized for clearance while side streets remain hazardous.
