Flint native becomes latest EMU president

Dr. Brendan Kelly, a Flint native and two-time alum of Eastern Michigan University (EMU), has been selected as EMU's 24th president, succeeding Dr. James Smith in June 2026. Kelly, who has held leadership roles at Arkansas State University, the University of West Georgia, and the University of South Carolina, expressed his deep connection to EMU and commitment to its mission. The EMU Board of Regents elected him during a special meeting, citing his vision and collaborative spirit as key qualities for guiding the university through transformative times in higher education. Kelly will join EMU in March 2026, ahead of his official start in June.
