Health insurance premiums could double for ACA enrollees after subsidy expiration

In 2026, 22 million Americans will face increased healthcare costs or lose their insurance due to the expiration of government subsidies for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Gina Abbas, whose husband Tim relies on ACA for a clinical trial for his brain tumor, can no longer afford the plan, forcing Tim onto Gina's insurance, which doesn't cover the trial. With enhanced premium tax credits not extended, enrollees face doubled premiums, impacting families like Gina's and others like Ashley McVay, a stage four cancer patient. Dr. Mark Fendrick warns that many in Michigan will struggle with higher premiums or become uninsured.
