Great Lakes icebreaking operation keeps shipping lanes open

Coast Guard Sector Detroit initiated Operation Coal Shovel to prevent ice from obstructing vessel traffic in southern Lake Huron, the St. Clair and Detroit River system, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Starting on January 2, 2026, U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers collaborate to ensure search and rescue operations, flood mitigation, and safe navigation for commerce amid worsening winter conditions.
