Dash cam video shows chase that ended in driver being shot, killed by Washtenaw County deputies
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office released new footage from a pursuit that ended with deputies shooting and killing an unarmed driver. The chase and shooting happened on early on Jan. 6, 2026, and began with two 911 calls. One reported the suspect driving erratically, and another caller said the suspect driver had threatened his wife with what was believed to be a gun. Deputies located and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, later identified as a 35-year-old St. Clair County man, didn't stop, prompting a chase. The chase ended near the Washtenaw County Human Services Center and the Villa at Parkridge Nursing Home, near Prospect and Towner streets in Ypsilanti. That’s when the deputies ran toward the van, giving commands for the suspect to show their hands. A deputy yelled “gun” before multiple officers fired shots at the van, killing the driver. The sheriff's office clarified on Jan. 13 that the driver actually did not have a gun. Michigan State Police are investigating. Four deputies remain on administrative leave.
