Salt shortage drives up costs for Metro Detroit snow removal
A national salt shortage is impacting snow removal efforts, with some counties in Michigan experiencing differing levels of severity. While Wayne and Oakland counties report issues with resupply, Macomb County is facing an actual shortage, having used between 30,000 and 40,000 tons of salt this winter, compared to their typical 50,000 tons. The shortage has increased salt prices from $100 to over $300 per ton, affecting businesses like Marcus Carr's Stonewall Landscaping and Snow Removal. Macomb County's prioritization of its own roads has led 20 municipalities to stop purchasing salt from the county.
