MDOT begins process for road usage charge study -- What to know

Potholes are on the rise this time of year with the fluctuating weather, meaning more road repairs. But, paying for those repairs is getting tougher because the gas tax isn’t bringing in as much money. With more electric cars and better gas mileage, fewer people are stopping to fill up, so gas tax revenue is dropping. The Michigan Department of Transportation is exploring a road usage charge, where drivers pay based on how many miles they drive, not just the gas they buy.  MDOT officials are testing different methods to make it work and plan to launch a pilot soon. Senior Advisor to Michigan’s Council on Future Mobility and Electrification, and newly appointed to the Michigan State Transportation Commission, John Peracchio, joined Local 4 Live to explain the road usage charge.
