Black Lake sturgeon season begins this weekend -- What to know
Starting at 8 a.m. on Feb. 7, the race to catch the “dinosaur fish” begins. No, it’s not really a dinosaur, but the Black Lake sturgeon has been around for millions of years. If you’re registered to fish, you can start at 8 a.m. If you get there at 8:20 a.m., you’re not getting any fish. The quota this year is six sturgeon, and that short season is thanks to decades of successful efforts to rebuild the sturgeon population. Tim Cwalinski, a fisheries unit supervisor in Gaylord with the Michigan DNR, joined Local 4 Live to talk about the season.
