Southfield launches free composting drop boxes to reduce food waste
The city of Southfield has introduced free composting drop boxes at seven locations to reduce food waste sent to landfills, with 600 countertop bins still available for residents. The initiative, starting February 9, 2026, aims to manage the 36 million pounds of food waste Southfield contributes annually, promoting sustainability and reducing methane emissions. Residents can drop all food scraps, including meat and dairy, in these boxes, using compostable liners provided by the program. Mayor Ken Siver encourages local businesses to participate, and 500 residents have already signed up, accessing the service via a mobile app.
