Metro Detroit road experts discuss possible solutions to fix ongoing pothole issue

All week long, Local 4 is helping you survive pothole season. While potholes are no fun, there is an underlying problem at the center of the pothole problem, and that’s our roads and infrastructure. Here’s a look at how a pothole is born: Traffic on the roads causes wear over time. The cracks start to form through the road surfaces. Then it rains; the rain seeps through those cracks, and the water pools beneath the road’s surface. Then, if temperatures dip, that water pooling under the surface will freeze and expand, causing the road to crack and push up. Then Mother Nature decides to warm up again; that ice melts and a gap is formed under the road surface. Finally, with constant traffic, it breaks down the road and a damaging pothole forms. Craig Bryson with the Road Commission for Oakland County, Macomb County Department of Roads Director Bryan Santo and Public Services for Wayne County Director Oladayo Akinyemi joined Local 4 Live to break this all down and maybe find some solution.
