Colon cancer in young adults leads centers to consider liver transplant

Colon cancer is increasingly affecting younger adults, often going undetected until it spreads. Andrew Sweeney, aware of his family history, was diagnosed with colon cancer after severe pain led to a CT scan revealing metastasis to his liver. Under aggressive treatment, including chemotherapy, his liver tumors shrank, making him eligible for a liver transplant, which was successfully completed at the University of Michigan. This innovative approach, requiring rigorous screening and a multidisciplinary team, offers hope for patients with liver-only metastasis, though it remains a rare option. Sweeney, now cancer-free for a year, looks forward to a longer future with his family.
