Why Detroit Metro Airport is hit with dozens of delays, cancellations this week
Currently, there are 29 delays and 70 cancellations at Detroit Metro Airport. According to the airport, security wait times are relatively short. It’s about five minutes to get through security at the Evans Terminals, and it’s about two minutes at the McNamara Terminal. Now, as to why there are so many delays and cancellations, it’s a one-two punch. On one side, the high winds could be causing some problems, and planes aren’t taking off. The other issues - shortage of TSA workers. TSA agents are currently working without paychecks because of the shutdown and loss of funding at the Department of Homeland Security. That’s leaving travelers waiting around. And across the country, delays and cancellations are much worse. The lost paychecks are leaving staffing gaps, long lines at checkpoints, and hundreds of TSA officers leaving or missing shifts during a busy travel season. Right now, it’s spring break for colleges and universities, but if Congress doesn’t fix the funding, this could extend into spring break for public schools across the country - leading to even longer lines.
