Gas prices spike: What's next
Gas prices across the country hit a two-and-a-half-year high this week, and overnight, Michigan saw another jump. On Monday, the U.S. government started a large-scale release of oil reserves. Eighty-six million barrels of oil are being released and are expected to hit the market by the end of the week. It comes as President Trump is appealing to other countries to help open the Strait of Hormuz to get oil flowing through that critical route. We saw a sizeable jump in gas prices across the state in the last 12 hours. We’re paying an average of $3.75 per gallon. That’s 15 cents higher than yesterday, and 81 cents higher than this time last month. Did you know there is a better day of the week to fill up? GasBuddy says Sunday is the most consistently affordable day to get gas in most states. If you wait until midweek, anytime from Wednesday to Friday, you’ll likely pay more. Patrick De Haan, who’s head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, joined Local 4 Live to talk about why prices continue to jump and what we can expect in the coming weeks.
