Why ticks are thriving in Metro Detroit: Warmer winters, more ticks, rising Lyme disease concerns
Southeast Michigan has seen a significant rise in tick populations, particularly the black-legged tick responsible for spreading Lyme disease, due to warmer winters and expanding tick habitats. Emergency room visits for tick-borne illnesses increased by 30% last May, and Lyme disease, once confined to western Michigan, now affects nearly all of southern lower Michigan. The emergence of lone star ticks, which can cause red meat allergies, adds to the growing concern. Experts advise using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and performing body checks after outdoor activities to reduce the risk of tick-borne illnesses.
