Oakland County voters to weigh in on school millage

Oakland County will soon weigh in on a new ballot proposal asking voters to give more money to public schools in the county.  The Oakland Schools Board of Education voted to put the millage on the Aug. 4 ballot after enough districts in the county endorsed it.  It’s a six-year millage that would generate $125 million for the 28 public school districts in Oakland County. That’s an average of more than $700 per student.  It would cost a homeowner with a taxable value of $175,000 about $262 per year. It’s important to note that not every school board in the county was in favor of this. Other counties in the area do have a school enhancement tax. In Wayne County, it generates about $108 million per year. And in Macomb County, a school enhancement millage brings in about $55 million per year.  Kenneth Gutman, the superintendent of the Oakland County Intermediate School District, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the Oakland County millage and where the money would go.
