Back to basics: Looking into why Metro Detroit school chooses not to teach with technology

Michigan ranks 44th in the country in reading. Only 4 in 10 Fourth Graders are reading at grade level. And more than 60% of Third Graders did not pass the state reading exam. And when you break it down by county, it really hits close to home.  In Macomb County, only 37% of Fourth Graders are reading at grade level. In Oakland and Washtenaw counties, that number bumps up slightly to 48%. And in Wayne County, only 30% of Fourth Graders are reading where they should be. Thousands of kids are falling behind before they even leave elementary school. That is why we are launching Turn the Page Michigan.  Carrie Symons, a special instructor with the Department of Teaching and Learning at Oakland University, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the idea of removing technology from classrooms and teaching children the old-school way.
