Higher gas prices hit drivers after Trump orders Iran oil blockade
President Donald Trump announced a blockade of all Iranian oil shipments after peace talks collapsed over the weekend, raising economic pressure on Iran. The blockade, enforced by U.S. Central Command, targets Iranian ports and coastal areas but does not affect ships between non-Iranian ports. Iran warned that any warships near the Strait of Hormuz would violate a ceasefire. Talks failed over U.S. demands for Iran to renounce nuclear weapons. Oil prices surged following the blockade, causing gas prices in Michigan to rise to $3.97 per gallon, an increase of ten cents in a week and 38 cents over the past month. Trump said prices may not fall before the November elections. Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence reports China may soon supply Iran with air defense systems; Trump threatened a 50% tariff on China if the deal proceeds.
