'It makes a lot of difference': Detroit's free tool libraries are growing

Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corporation in Detroit operates a tool library that allows residents to borrow tools and equipment for free, making home and community projects more accessible and affordable. The program, started in 2025, has seen increasing participation, offering a range of items from lawn mowers and weed whackers to shovels and power washers. Local 4 and Bailey Park CDC are partnering for the "Tools to Spare" event to collect new and gently used tools for distribution across five tool libraries in the city. The initiative supports individuals and groups in maintaining and improving their neighborhoods without the expense of purchasing tools.
