Henry Ford Health performs world-first Gamma Tile procedure on spinal tumor

Doctors at Henry Ford Health successfully treated Michael Baumstark’s recurring spinal tumor, which had caused severe pain after his colon cancer returned, using an innovative approach never before tried in the spine. By adapting Gamma Tiles—a technology previously used for brain tumors—they worked with a multidisciplinary team and the company to develop a tailored solution, including creating a 3D-printed model of Michael’s spine for surgical planning. After a successful simulation, the real procedure was performed, resulting in pain relief and no recurrence 18 months later. This marks a significant advancement in treating spinal metastases when traditional therapies have been exhausted.
