How Detroit's free community tool libraries are helping neighbors transform vacant lots into gardens

Detroit’s community tool libraries, supported by organizations like the Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corporation, provide residents with free access to essential tools for home and garden projects. In partnership with the City of Detroit, these libraries help maintain spaces such as the Kirby Senior Community Garden, where borrowed tools and community donations are crucial for ongoing upkeep. Local 4 is hosting a “Tools to Spare” event on May 20 to collect new and gently used tools and work gloves, which will be distributed across five tool library sites in the city.
