Investigators at Local 4 confront accused ‘practiced and heartless’ auto scammer

Marcelo Cipriano Alvarado, a 31-year-old from Dearborn, is accused of orchestrating a large-scale auto scam across southeast Michigan and Ohio, allegedly defrauding over 25 victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars through fake car sales, unreturned vehicles, and issuing bad checks. Victims describe a pattern of elaborate excuses and emotional manipulation, with many left without their cars or money for years, while law enforcement agencies and the Metro Detroit Auto-theft Recovery Team have documented extensive criminal and civil complaints against him. Alvarado, now facing 10 felony charges including running a criminal enterprise, remains incarcerated on bond, with his next court date set for June 16, 2026.
