Man sentenced to life for killing Melvindale officer over a flicked cigarette

Michael Lopez was sentenced to life without parole for the first-degree murder of Melvindale police officer Mohamed Said, whom he fatally shot in July 2024 after a confrontation over a discarded cigarette. During sentencing, Lopez showed little remorse and claimed self-defense, but Judge Bridget Mary Hathaway and the jury found overwhelming evidence against him. Statements from Said’s family highlighted the emotional toll of the loss, and Lopez was also convicted on multiple related charges, including firearm and drug offenses. He has expressed intentions to appeal the verdict.
