A pipe, some dry hay, and a wind gust: How Detroit nearly ceased to exist in 1805

In 1805, a devastating fire nearly destroyed Detroit after wind-blown pipe ashes ignited dry hay, burning almost the entire city within six hours. Guided by figures like Gabriel Richard and Judge Augustus Woodward, Detroiters rebuilt the city with improved planning and resilience, leading to rapid population growth and the founding of the University of Michigan. The city’s seal and motto, reflecting hope and rebirth from the ashes, commemorate this pivotal event and its lasting legacy.
