Metro Detroit weather: Soaking rains, wind, warmth ahead

Pattern change to winter coming up

DETROIT – I’m back from my annual Thanksgiving trip to spend the holiday with family, and I hope your Thanksgiving was as good as mine. The Monday after Thanksgiving is always my favorite day of the year, because that’s when other Goodfellows and I do our part to provide a Christmas to Detroit’s poorest children. I'll fill you in with more details on that at the end of this article, but I want to get to the weather right away since there’s so much to talk about Monday.

Rain will quickly overspread the area this evening, and it’ll really pour by late evening; you’ll hear it when you go to bed. Total rainfall could approach or even exceed 1 inch in some areas. Rain should end late at night, so the morning rush hour shouldn’t have any rain coming down, although roads will undoubtedly still be wet. Lows will be very mild, and only drop into the upper 40s (that’s 9 degrees Celsius for our Canadian friends). It’ll also be a windy night, with a southeast to south wind at 15 to 20 mph, increasing as the rain intensifies, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph possible.

Tuesday should be rain-free, breezy and much warmer. Mostly cloudy skies should become partly cloudy, and perhaps even mostly sunny for the middle part of the day. Highs in the upper 50s (14-15 degrees Celsius), with a south-southwest wind at 15 to 20 mph.

Tuesday’s sunrise is at 7:41 a.m., and Tuesday’s sunset is at 5:03 p.m.

Increasing clouds Tuesday night, with a small shower chance. Lows in the mid-40s (7 degrees Celsius).

Cloudy on Wednesday with a couple of showers possible.  Highs in the mid-50s (12 degrees Celsius).

Cloudy Wednesday night, with lows in the upper 30s (3-4 degrees Celsius).

Cloudy and breezy on Thursday, with a rain or snow shower possible. Highs in the low 40s (6 degrees Celsius).

Mostly cloudy Thursday night, with a snow shower possible.  Lows in the low to mid 30s (0-1 degree Celsius).

Mostly cloudy on Friday, with highs in the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius).

Mostly cloudy Friday night, with lows in the low 30s (0 degrees Celsius).

Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy on Saturday, with highs in the low 40s (5 degrees Celsius).

Mostly cloudy on Sunday with rain or snow showers developing.  Highs near 40 degrees (4-5 degrees Celsius).

Winter on the way

My long-range models are suggesting that we’ll finally see a more permanent change to wintry temperatures toward the end of next week.  While it’s way too early to speculate about specific day-to-day weather, it should become cold enough after the pattern change that any weather systems that do cross our area would produce snow.  Stay tuned.

How you can help give a Christmas to Detroit’s neediest children:

As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, today is Goodfellow Day in Detroit.  The Goodfellows began selling papers in 1914 as a way to raise money to provide Christmas packages to our city’s poorest kids who, otherwise, wouldn’t receive anything for Christmas.

My wife’s grandfather, Paul Camiener, was one of the earliest Goodfellows; he started selling papers back in the 1920s.  It’s amazing how many people this incredible organization helps: just today as I was selling papers, one lady buying a paper from me told me about her experience receiving Goodfellow packages when she was a child.

In fact, just a few years after I started selling papers, my own mother told me that she received them as a child, too (my grandfather died when she was 7 years old, so they were dirt poor). I had never known that.

There are three important things I want you to know about the Detroit Goodfellows:

  • The Christmas packages are guaranteed to ONLY go to the city’s poorest children.  Each child will receive a big box that includes a sweatshirt, sweat pants, socks, underwear, gloves, a hat, dental kits, an age-appropriate book, a toy and school supplies. Incredibly, 34,000 kids will get a Goodfellow package.
  • Every single penny that is donated goes directly toward the purchase of the Christmas packages. How many charities can tell you that 100 percent of your donation goes to the cause? No others that I’m aware of.
  • Your contribution to the Goodfellows is completely tax deductible.
  • If you would like to contribute to the Goodfellows and help bring some Christmas joy into the lives of our poorest kids who, otherwise, wouldn’t know the feeling of receiving a gift, feel free to write a check to "Detroit Goodfellows" and mail it to me here at the station: WDIV-TV, 550 West Lafayette Blvd., Detroit, MI  48226-3140.  I’ll make sure it gets to the right place, and I’ll also know that your heart is in the right place.

You may not know it, but I’ll bet you know somebody who received Goodfellow packages when he or she was a kid. This is a way to “pay it forward” and help a child that you or your own kids may know someday. If you’d like more information about Detroit’s most historic charitable endeavor, head to the Goodfellows’ website at www.DetroitGoodfellows.org.
