Wildfire smoke gets worse before dispersing in Metro Detroit

Air Quality Alert continues Saturday for Southeast Michigan

The wildfire smoke will get worse in Southeast Michigan this weekend before it gets better.

Saturday’s mostly sunny skies will increasingly become hazy as the wildfire smoke builds midday. The smoky air could reach the “unhealthy” level during the afternoon and evening.

Heading to Blues, Brews and Barbecue at Westland’s Thomas H. Brown Central Park or other outdoor events? If you start to feel any throat, nose, or eye irritation, or if you start coughing, go indoors. It is best to keep windows closed until air conditions improve.

Due to the smoky air, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect for all of Southeast Michigan through Saturday.

It is recommended to postpone strenuous outdoor activities until the Air Quality Alert has passed.

Apart from the smoky condition on Saturday, the weather will be mostly calm. A high-pressure system will limit clouds and help to keep winds light. Highs will be in the upper 70s to 80 degrees. Winds will be out of the northeast around 5 mph.

Saturday night will be mostly clear but hazy. Lows will be in the mid-50s to 60 degrees.

Sunday

Sunday will keep the mostly clear skies, with less wildfire smoke. Daytime winds will be out of the east at 5 to 10 mph. Highs will reach the lower-80s, and lows will be in the lower-60s.

Looking Ahead

The clear skies and near-normal should continue into the start of the workweek, but a pop-up rain shower cannot be ruled out for Tuesday through Thursday. Most of next week will see highs in the mid-80s and lows in the 60s.
