What to know about heavy rain, whipping winds hitting Metro Detroit this weekend

Seasonal end to the work week

DETROIT – A few scattered showers are possible north of Metro Detroit this morning. Otherwise, mostly cloudy and seasonal with highs in the mid-60s. High school football games should remain dry tonight, but an active pattern arrives this weekend which will impact your outdoor plans.

The Weekend

For Saturday, we will see a surge in temperatures behind a warm front with high temperatures well into the 70s for much of the area with 80 degrees possible in our southern communities closer to the state line.

A cold front and potent low pressure system moves in which will kick start a rainy stretch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. This is not great news for the Detroit Free Press Marathon runners. I’d recommend scrapping your outdoor plans for Sunday as this one will be a soaker for much of the day.

Heaviest rainfall looks to be focused Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. There is still a bit of uncertainty with the exact track of the low which we will continue to fine-tune, but at this point widespread rainfall totals will likely range from 1.25″ to near 2.75″ across southeast Michigan.

The silver-lining is that this will help with the drought conditions across the area, however heavy rain and potential flooding will not be the only hazards with this system. Secure your outdoor Halloween decorations! Although wind potential will also depend on the eventual track, wind gusts of 30 mph or greater are expected on Sunday. Highs on Sunday will fall back into the 60s.

Next Week

Unsettled weather returns by late Monday night into Tuesday morning as another strong low pressure system looks to track across the Great Lakes. Gusty winds and more rainfall will likely accompany this system into mid-week. Behind it, cooler than average conditions with high temperatures down into the 50s Tuesday through the end of the work week.
