Sunny, seasonal and breezy conditions continue in Metro Detroit with rain chances later this week

Rain chances increase by late week

DETROIT – Cool, but not nearly as cold and frosty as yesterday morning. Sunny and seasonal again today with wind gusts around 20-25 mph. Mainly dry and a bit breezy again Wednesday.

Rain chances increase late Wednesday night with most areas getting some rainfall on Thursday. The rainfall could become heavier by later afternoon and evening.

Temperatures trend below average by Friday with a few lingering showers around on Halloween. However, there is a better chance for trick-or-treating to be dry across Metro Detroit, but windy with temperatures falling into the 40s.

Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane hunters recorded an astonishing 241 mph wind gust in Hurricane Melissa on October 27, 2025, at an altitude of 709 feet. This measurement is one of the strongest ever recorded in a hurricane and indicates the storm’s extreme intensity, which reached Category 5 status. Hurricane Hunters reported that they saw birds in the calm of the eye because the winds were too violent in the eyewall and they couldn’t escape.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds as of this writing are 175 mph with gusts 215 mph. This is a historic storm on many levels. It is now stronger than Hurricane Katrina with 901mb pressure (the lower the pressure the stronger the storm). The maximum potential intensity of a tropical cyclone is the theoretical limit of the strength of a tropical cyclone that the Earth’s atmosphere can produce which is currently around 184 mph. This hurricane is nearing that limit.

As of 5AM Tuesday

The hurricane is 115 miles WSW OF Kingston, Jamaica and about 290 miles SW of Guantanamo, Cuba moving NNE at 5mph. The eye will likely make landfall by late morning/midday. Melissa is expected to bring rainfall of 15 to 30 inches to portions of Jamaica. For eastern Cuba, storm total rainfall of 10 to 20 inches, with local amounts to 25 inches, is expected into Wednesday resulting in life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding with numerous landslides.
