Why Metro Detroit could see some school closings Friday before winter break

Thursday rain, possible flash freeze, dusting of snow could create tough morning road conditions

DETROIT – Metro Detroit could see some school closings on Friday, Dec. 19, just before winter break.

Temperatures are on the rise through the middle of this week around Southeast Michigan, with highs Thursday likely to reach the mid- or upper 40s.

That comes with rain, though, and right behind those 40-degree temps is a major temperature drop. A flash freeze is possible as temperature plummet 20 degrees overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

Any water that’s still on surfaces from Thursday’s rain could freeze into ice. Then, snow is possible just after midnight Thursday into Friday.

We aren’t expecting much snow, but there could be enough of a dusting to cover the ice that forms beneath. That black ice could create dangerous road conditions on Friday morning.

For that reason, there’s a chance some schools could elect to close on Friday.

Since we’re still a few days away, the 4Warn Weather team will continue to fine-tune the forecast as the week goes on.
