Another round of storms expected to move across Metro Detroit Tuesday -- what to expect

4Warn Weather Alert issued for this afternoon and evening

Hot, humid air fuels risk for severe storms Tuesday in Metro Detroit (WDIV)

Another active round of severe weather is expected to move across Metro Detroit later this afternoon and evening as a cold front moves into the area.

Gusts will reach 30 mph today ahead of the storms. Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 80s once again, and after Metro Airport reached 90 degrees yesterday, another 90-degree reading today is certainly possible. The standing record high for this date is 91 degrees, set back in 1934.

The combination of heat, humidity and an approaching cold front will create favorable conditions for thunderstorms to rapidly develop during the afternoon hours.

Timeline

Much like yesterday, the primary window for storm activity is expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Threats

Some storms could become severe, with the strongest cells capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and even isolated tornadoes. The region remains under a slight risk — level 2 out of 5 — for severe weather. Because of the elevated threat, a 4Warn Weather Alert is in effect for this afternoon and evening.

Relief arrives behind the cold front as noticeably cooler and drier air settles in for Wednesday and Thursday. High temperatures will fall back into the 60s through the remainder of the work week, bringing a much different feel compared to the recent summer-like heat. Rain chances return late Friday into Friday night, with another opportunity for thunderstorms on Saturday.

A few lingering showers may continue into Sunday morning before conditions gradually improve. Looking ahead to the Memorial Day holiday, the forecast is trending drier with temperatures rebounding into the upper 70s. That would provide favorable weather for outdoor plans and local Memorial Day parades on Monday.
