DETROIT – New Mayor Mike Duggan says he wants six months to show city residents that his administration can solve many of Detroit's problems. He also says poor city services are a thing of the past.
A ceremonial oath of office was given during an investiture program Tuesday to Duggan, the City Council, city clerk and police commissioners.
Duggan says he was embarrassed to see riders standing Monday and Tuesday in subzero temperatures while waiting for behind-schedule buses. On Tuesday, he announced the hiring of a new public transportation director.
Duggan is sharing some duties in running the city with state-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr. Duggan will handle blight removal, public lighting and the Fire Department.
Orr successfully petitioned to move Detroit into bankruptcy and remains in charge of overall city finances.
