Driver of tanker that exploded on I-75 in Detroit cited for careless driving

DETROIT – Michigan State Police have cited the driver of a tanker that overturned and caught fire on an Interstate 75 ramp in Detroit for careless driving.

Lt. Michael Shaw said the tanker truck was carrying 9,000 gallons of unleaded fuel when it exploded about 8:45 a.m. Sunday on the northbound I-75 ramp (the Stroh's curve) at I-375.

The driver wasn't hurt, but the crash forced the closure of the ramp until late Friday so about 300 feet of concrete can be replaced.

Shaw said the driver, a 36-year-old Detroit man, told investigators mechanical problems caused his vehicle's back tires to lock and the tanker to overturn.

MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will also be conducting a compliance review of the driver's employer.

How this affects traffic:

The ramp sends northbound I-75 (Fisher Freeway) traffic over I-375 and back onto northbound I-75 (Chrysler Freeway).

Drivers will still be able to access I-375 from northbound I-75.
