Escaped prisoner captured in New Baltimore, police say

Man missing since Sept. 24

NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. – A man who escaped from police custody while being transported to St. Clair County has been recaptured, police said. 

Police said they responded to a call on Sept.  24 about a suspicious person in the area of 15 Mile and Groesbeck. When deputies arrived, they found the man in question and discovered through a criminal check that the man had an outstanding warrant out of St. Clair County.

Clinton Township police transported the man to the area of I-94 and 26 Mile Road where he was to be turned over to the Marysville Police Department. During the prisoner exchange between Clinton Township and Marysville police, the man was able to break free and fled into a wooded area nearby.

Police searched the area but were unable to locate the man.  

On Tuesday, Marysville police said there was a call for a suspicious person in New Baltimore. Officers arrived at the business, but the man gone. However, after reviewing surveillance video officers were able to identify the man as the escaped prisoner. 

Officers set up a perimeter, sent in a K-9 and were able to capture the man. Police said he had been staying in an abandoned house in the area.
