DETROIT - Detroit police shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon who, police say, tried to run down officers with a car and later threatened to kill them with a gun.

The man allegedly stole a gun from a home on Detroit's west side and tried to run down police who were responding to the area.

The officers were not hurt but the man led police on a chase which ended near Joy Road and Interstate 96. That's where he ran into a house. Four officers followed him inside.

"While inside the residence, they were confronted by the suspect who was inside a closet," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "He emerged, pointed a weapon, a pistol, in the direction of the officers. He was ordered to drop the weapon, officers responded and the suspect was fatally wounded."

Police have not released the identity of the suspect. The shooting remains under investigation.
