Man threatens police while barricaded in overturned car after crash in Sterling Heights

Driver arrested after standoff in smashed car

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Michigan State Police troopers arrested a man Monday night after he barricaded himself in an overturned car and threatened to shoot officers.

The standoff began after the driver led troopers on a police chase and crashed on the side of the road in Sterling Heights.

Troopers said the chase started as a traffic stop near M-59 and Romeo Plank Road, but the driver didn't pull over. He led troopers on a chase from M-59 to I-94 to Metro Parkway, where he hit a spike strip, which caused the car to roll over.

The car is overturned on the side of westbound Metro Parkway near Schoenherr Road in Sterling Heights. The driver told police he was armed and wouldn't come out of his vehicle, but he eventually exited the vehicle around 11:45 p.m.

Police arrested the man after he crawled out the windshield of the smashed car and dropped the gun on the ground in surrender.
